Loteria de Navidad is the world’s biggest and richest lottery, with a jackpot pool in excess of €2 billion.
Loteria de Navidad which will take place on 22 December 2016 will be with €2.31 billion in prizes!
The lottery, officially known as Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad or Loteria de Navidad, began in 1812 and has become an annual Spanish tradition.
The draws are held in Madrid, and in every year, on the 22nd of December, is considered a national event.
Differ from standard lotteries in two important aspects. Unlike other lotteries, whose draws are generally brief and completed with relatively little fanfare, El Gordo de Navidad draws take hours to complete due to the sheer number of prizes and the format is closer to a raffle than a standard lottery.
In the actual El Gordo Navidad, the players choose which number to play by choosing from a series of five-digit codes.
Players have the choice of buying a whole ticket (known as the billet) or one-tenth of a ticket (called a decimal). The cost of a whole billet is so steep that often players will form syndicate type groups in order to purchase the whole ticket.
Groups can be formed between towns, families or friends.
If that ticket wins a prize, this group will keep the entire value of that prize.
The balls are drawn from two machines, called ‘bombs’, which each hold thousands of balls.
One bomb contains balls inscribed with a pre-determined number combination, while the other bomb contains balls inscribed with a prize value.
Each pre-determined number is printed on numerous tickets so, when a prize is selected to correspond with the number drawn, the prize fund for that tier will be shared between all of the players whose ticket matches the number drawn.
People from all over Spain travelers especially to various districts to purchase tickets with numbers that match them.
